The night the goodbye never came
For twenty years Lionel Messi had built towards nights like this, and this was the one that got away. Spain beat Argentina 1-0 after extra time at MetLife Stadium to be crowned world champions, and the defending holders went down without landing a blow. Argentina did not manage a single shot on target. Not one, in 120 minutes of a World Cup final.
Ferran Torres settled it in the 106th minute, stabbing in at the near post after Nico Williams had headed the ball across the six-yard box, beyond Emiliano Martinez. It was 0-0 at 90 minutes. It never really felt that even.
Starved of the ball
Messi is 39. This, by every reasonable expectation, was his last act on this stage, and Spain made sure it passed almost in silence. They kept 65% of the ball, completed 762 passes to Argentina's 358, and worked Martinez until his gloves were soaked. The Argentina keeper made eleven saves. At the other end, Spain's goalkeeper made none, because he had nothing to make.
The numbers are brutal in their way. Spain had nineteen shots to Argentina's two, twelve on target to none, an expected-goals count of 1.94 to 0.20 per the match data. Four big chances fell Spain's way, none for Argentina, who did not manage a single attempt of any kind inside the 90 minutes. A team does not defend a World Cup like that.
Messi drifted, dropped deep, went looking for the game. The game would not come to him. Argentina could not string together the moves that had carried them this far, and their captain spent long stretches as a spectator to Spain's carousel.
Two trophies, both gone
There was a second loss folded inside the first. The Golden Boot went to Kylian Mbappe, whose ten goals settled the race for good. Messi finished the tournament on eight and did not add to the tally in the final. The individual prize that might have softened the night stayed out of reach, decided in a Frenchman's favour while Argentina chased shadows in New Jersey.
Argentina were reduced to ten men by a late sending-off, deep into stoppage time of extra time, a footnote to a result already written. By then the trophy was Spanish and everybody in the stadium knew it.
The end of something
For Spain this was a coronation and a double. Luis de la Fuente's side added the world title to their Euro 2024 crown, a first since 2010, built on Rodri's calm in midfield and the fearlessness of Lamine Yamal, a champion at 19. The contrast with the man in the other shirt could hardly be sharper: the teenager lifting the cup Messi could not keep.
Argentina will feel this one for a while. They came as holders and left beaten, out-passed, out-shot, and unable to test the opposition keeper once. That is the hard truth the stats leave behind.
Whether Messi plays another tournament is a question only he can answer, and he is unlikely to rush it. What is not in doubt is that the farewell everyone half-expected, the golden exit with the trophy held aloft one last time, did not arrive. Some eras end with a roar. This one ended with a team that could not get a shot on target.
