At 19, Lamine Yamal is a few days past a birthday and a match away from history. Spain's forward turned 19 on July 14, the eve of the semi-final, and on Sunday he starts a World Cup final at MetLife Stadium against Lionel Messi, the childhood hero whose game he grew up copying. Should he take the pitch, and he will, he becomes the third-youngest player to appear in a World Cup final. Only Pele and Italy's Giuseppe Bergomi have managed it younger, per Al Jazeera.
It is a lot to hang on a teenager. Yamal has spent the past two years making that kind of sentence sound ordinary.
The teenager Spain cannot lose with
Yamal is a Barcelona forward, and the number 19 on his back has aged neatly with him. He has scored just once at this World Cup, against Saudi Arabia, and that modest tally undersells him badly. His job is to make the game happen, not to finish it. In the semi-final he did exactly that, winning the first-half penalty that sent Spain on their way to a 2-0 win over France and into the final.
The numbers around him tell the fuller story. Spain have not lost a match with Yamal on the pitch. He has started 12 games across this World Cup and Euro 2024 combined, and Spain have won every one, per Al Jazeera. It is a run that has quietly made him Spain's most important player, whatever his age says.
From Euro wonderkid to World Cup finalist
This is not his first grand stage. At Euro 2024 Yamal was the youngest player at the tournament, scored in the semi-final against France, and left with the Young Player of the Tournament award, per Al Jazeera. Two summers on, France were again the side standing in his way, and again he found a way through.
The stat that travels best is the assists. Yamal set up four goals at that Euro, more than anyone else, per Al Jazeera, the kind of return usually filed under names a decade older. His game has always been about the pass before the goal, not the goal.
Messi, and a torch nobody asked to pass
The framing writes itself, which does not make it wrong. On one touchline, Messi at 39, in what is widely expected to be his last World Cup. On the other, the 19-year-old who grew up idolising him. Fox Sports cast Sunday as a torch handed between eras, though nobody has told either man to hurry.
Messi against the boy who wanted to be Messi is the sort of line a final rarely delivers so neatly. For Yamal it is also a first: a senior World Cup final at an age when most players are still learning the professional game. He has looked entirely at home on every stage put in front of him. There is little reason to think the biggest one will change that.
Kick-off is 3pm Eastern in New Jersey. Beat Argentina, and Lamine Yamal will have a world title before his 20th birthday. Lose, and he will still have most of a career left to put that right. Either way, the sight of a teenager walking out for a World Cup final is the sort of thing that tends to outlast a single result.
